The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (or MIT), one of the topmost ranked institutes is a private research Institute situated at Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1861 by William Barton Rogers. In 1861, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts approved charter for its establishment as Massachusetts Institute of Technology. William Rogers wanted to set a new milestone in higher education to solve the challenges in science and technology. He started MIT as his dream which became not only the higher study research centre but also the most prestigious educational institute of the world.

MIT was a step to follow the scientific and industrial growth and it adopted the European polytechnic university model to enrich practical experiences of students. MIT also served the Government of US in Second World War as well as cold war through its research work into developing computers, radars, artificial intelligence for advanced machines. It is built on a 168-acre land near the Charles River Basin. We can assume its quality through its faculty list which has been supported by 76 Nobel Laureates, 50 National Medal of Science and 35 MacArthur Fellows. MIT spends nearly $718.2 million in research every year.

Initially it was dedicated to only physical science and engineering later it added new subjects such as biology, economics, management, architecture & planning, humanities, arts and social sciences. MIT was developed as an institute for science subjects subsequently it has become a big banyan tree which has five schools, one college, 32 academic departments equipped with advanced infrastructure laboratories.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is operated by a non-profit organization and governed by the appointed board of trustees which is known as the MIT Corporation. It has 43 elected members (for five year), 25 life members (can vote until their 75th birthday), 3 elected officials (President, Treasurer and Secretary), other members and alumni association. MIT’s financial management is taken care by MIT Investment Management Company (MITIMCo) a subsidiary agency of MIT Corporation.

MIT organizes collaboration and association with other reputed universities of the world as well as big corporate to provide maximum benefits to its student such as Harvard University, (their association is known as Harvard-MIT division of Health Sciences and Technology) and University of Cambridge (known as the Cambridge-MIT Institute). Besides this, MIT has its own publication unit named MIT Press that is publishing more than 200 books and 40 journals annually on various subjects including science, technology, arts, architecture, new media, etc.

MIT operates undergraduate and graduate program for the students. MIT has enrolled more than 4200 undergraduate and 6100 gradate student in 2009-2010 session. It has 1009 faculty member including 198 women. MIT has set a record in education as its faculty members are awarded by the Nobel Prizes (27 times) in various streams of science. Likewise its alumni list are the most impressive list of the world with the maximum number of the members (more than 120,000 alumni and alumnae) in all branches of education, in which 76 MIT alumni have won the Nobel Prize for their work. Some MIT alumni are— former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former National Economic Council chairman Lawrence H. Summers and many more. Its alumni had established the biggest corporation in the worlds such as Intel, McDonnell Douglas, 3Com, Qualcomm, Bose, etc.

In other words, we can say that MIT has a wonder in itself which had produced and trained the more talented peoples in the world for the growth of science and technology, engineering and other subjects. Today it has a self-defined name in education which is a dream for every student and faculty.
